In the United States, black women represent 14.4% of the female population and 52% of the African American population, yet exceed all races in mortality for heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. According to the CDC, Black women have a life expectancy that's THREE years shorter, on average, than white women with stress being the prevalent cause. For black women, our self-care is critical. We spend most our time caring for the needs of others — family, friends, coworkers and spouses — that we compromise on or sacrifice our own needs altogether. And LIMITED self-care leads to MASSive self-destruction.
Self-care is an individualized strategy that has the potential to reduce and buffer the impact of stress on many black women’s health.
